5 Ways to Combat Your Holiday Hangover

We’ve officially survived the holiday season and all the feasting and drinking that comes with it. After copious amounts of sugary treats, bottomless champagne and non-stop parties, it’s safe to say most of us are feeling less than optimal. It’s also fairly common to feel a bit unmotivated and blue after the holidays. Luckily, there’s a way out from this slump and a few simple ways to feel better every day.

1. Get moving.

You don’t need to join a gym on the first of the year like the rest of the world, but moving your body will certainly improve your mood. If you’ve been sedentary for awhile, commit to 10-20 minutes of walking a day and you will likely feel a lift in your spirits.  If you’re already active, don’t let the winter weather stop you. Keep at it. The fresh air, increased blood flow and endorphins will give you an instant boost.

2. Focus on healthy fats.

After overdosing on sugar, it’s important to consume a lot of healthy fats. Think avocado oil, walnuts, grass-fed butter and salmon. This will help to keep those sugar cravings at bay while also keeping you satiated. High fat foods provide the comfort we crave from sugar without the blood sugar spike and crash.

3. Seek out antioxidant rich foods.

4.  Put down the corkscrew and turn on the kettle.

Temporarily swapping out your nightly glass of wine for some calming herbal tea can help to get back on track after too much sugar and alcohol. Hot tea is a nice substitute for the calming and warming effects of red wine. Chamomile is a great choice before bed because of its mildly sedative effect.

5.  Be easy on yourself.

It’s completely ok to indulge more than usual over the holidays and exercise a bit less. Don’t beat yourself up. January is a new month and the perfect time to get back on track. A positive attitude goes a long way.
